A stroke is caused by the interruption of the blood supply to the brain, usually because a blood vessel bursts or is blocked by a clot. This cuts off the supply of oxygen and nutrients, causing damage to the brain tissues.
SYMPTOMS
The most common symptom of a stroke is sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg, most often on one side of the body.
Other symptoms include confusion, difficulty in speaking or understanding speech, sight becomes blur on one or both eyes, difficulty in walking, dizziness, loss of balance and severe headache. Fainting may also occur.

The effects of a stroke depends on which part of the brain is injured and how severe it is.
A severe case can cause sudden death, in most cases when a person slumps after an attack. It is more likely to survive an attack if the person is in a sitting position.

WHO estimated that more than 17.3 million people died from cardiovascular deseases such as heart attack or stroke 2008, affecting both men and woman.
Fortunately, 80% of early heart attack and stroke are preventable. Here are practices that can help with prevention or control:
1. Healthy diet: This is crucial to the circulation of blood as it concerns the body system. This must include plenty of fruits and vegetables, while grains, lean meat, fish and pulses. The intake of sugar, salt and fats must be reduced to its very minimum.
2. Regular physical exercise: 30 to 60 minutes physical activity everyday will help to maintain weight and giving it cardiovascular fitness. This go a long in preventing heart attack and stroke.
3. Avoid the use of tobacco: Tobacco as we know is very dengarous to health irrespective of its form. Whether cigarette, pipes, cigars or chewable tobacco. The risk of a stroke or heart attack begins to reduce immediately a person stops the use of tobacco. The longer a person abstains from smoking tobacco the lesser the chances of an attack.
4. Check your blood pressure: This practise will help reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. It usually does not have symptoms but regular check it a good practice.
5. Know your blood sugar: High blood glucose puts a person in diabetic condition thereby, increasing the risk of a stroke. A diabetic patient must check and control blood sugar level and pressure regularly.
6. Know your blood lipid: Blood cholesterol and abnormal lipid must be controlled to avoid heart attack and stroke. This can be done through healthy diet or an appropriate medication.
